Julie Olson is running for the new Clark County Council District 2 position which will be on the ballot this November as a result of the County Charter approved by voters last fall. The west district encompasses the cities of Ridgefield and La Center and surrounding rural hamlets. District 2 also includes most of Lakeshore, Salmon Creek and central county areas.
"I will bring a strong, independent voice to the Clark County Council," said Olson. "At a time when our county is growing steadily in an improving economy, it's important to focus on economic development opportunities to grow jobs in Southwest Washington with a careful eye on fiscal responsibility," she said. "Taxpayers deserve thoughtful consideration on how their tax dollars are spent as the county provides regional services including public safety, mental health services, a court system, adult and juvenile detention facilities, regional parks, land use planning and important transportation infrastructure," said Olson.
While the county charter system of governance is new to residents, it's not new to Olson. As a two-term member of the Ridgefield School Board, and presiding President for six of those years, Olson sees her role as County Council Member similar to her time on the school board. "As board members, we set important financial and planning policy but left the day to day administrative work of running the school district to our appointed superintendent," said Olson. "As a County Council Member, I will represent the voice of District 2 residents just as I've been a strong citizen's advocate on the Ridgefield School Board."
Olson is launching her County race with broad support. An official campaign kick-off event is slated for Friday, May 15 at 6:00 p.m. at Shangri-La Farm in Fern Prairie, home of State Representative Liz Pike. In addition to Pike's early endorsement, Olson has garnered official support from 18th District State Senator Ann Rivers, 18th District State Representative Brandon Vick, 17th District State Representatives Lynda Wilson and Paul Harris, and Clark County Assessor Peter VanNortwick). Olson is also endorsed by Ridgefield School Board members Jeff Vigue, Scott Gullickson, Steve Radosevich and Becky Greenwald and former Ridgefield Schools Superintendent Art Edgerly.
