Another Big Win!

If you have items for the calendar or newsletter, send them to media@clarkrepublicans.com.

A fantastic Lincoln Day Dinner!  Many remarked that it was our best ever!  Terrific speakers, incredible auction items and very generous guests.  We enjoyed each others company and raised a ton of money for the party.  We’ll report the amount raised next week once we have all the expenses recorded, but we think it is impressive.

The Clark County Republican Party was financially strong coming into this most important fundraiser of 2016 even after months of intense and expensive work of the caucus and convention season.  The money raised Saturday will allow us to continue our implementation of modern communication methods, skills we already possess and are anxious to exploit.  We have a great base of volunteers to help with GOTV efforts and the presidential race has been adding to our numbers daily.

A HUGE THANK YOU is due the magnificent volunteers who sold tickets, procured and donated auction items, brought desserts, wine & spirits and those who worked during the event!  Thank you also to those who had the vision to bring these speakers to Clark County.

Thank you to Fred Boyd of Boyd’s Auctions and Estate Sales who sold the items so generously contributed by individuals and businesses such as Alan Kangas, Mayer’s Custom Meats, DeWils Industries, Creekside Home Painting, Representative Liz Pike, Jase & Jennie Stefanski, Refuge Custom Painting, RW Pawn, NW Vista Balloon Adventures, Richard Johnson, Gevorg Mkhitaryan, Joseph Wagner, Glen Kincaid, Debbie Larner, MK Tactical, David & Donna Madore, Global Security & Sutherland Plumbing.  What a generous group who went above and beyond what was required to make this a spectacular event!  Many, many more donors showered us with great silent auction items too numerous to list here today.

It was a beautiful event which was captured by CVTV.  You can watch it here in its entirety (except for the fantastic auction part): http://www.cvtv.org/vid_link/18161 or you can click on the following links to view specific portions:

What about the 100 signatures needed to stop the new County Ordinance?  This update from Christian Berrigan:
A Victory for Activists:  The attempt by Councilors Boldt, Stewart and Olson to run our county council with nearly no rules of order has been suspended for 120 days.  These three councilors attempted to make Roberts Rules of Order no longer govern the council as it does now – and offered no replacement other than to give Chairman Boldt the unprecedented power to make up the rules as he goes along.  This effort also included attempts to strip any remaining influence from the conservative minority such as allowing the suspension of the rules on a simple majority vote instead of 2/3s, and making a violation of the rules of practice equal to a violation of law.   And worse, the enforcement, adjudication and sentencing of this new law would be handled not by law enforcement or a prosecutor or the judicial system, but by a simple majority of councilors with a token citizen thrown in for good measure.  But at the same time the Charter has produced these nightmares it has given us the ability to try to stop such nonsense.  The first step was when activists circulated a referendum petition, acquired the requisite number of signatures and filed it with the County Auditor.  Their signatures were accepted, and the new ordinance establishing the 2016 Clark County Rules of Unfair Practice was officially suspended for 120 days!

Now we will have the option of gathering a large number of petitions to place the repeal of this ordinance on the ballot.  The final form of the major petition has been agreed upon, and now we await the official language of the referendum from the Prosecutor’s office.  Whether or not an effort is launched to gather the nearly 20,000 signatures required to get the repeal question on the ballot can be evaluated over the next few days.  For example, instead of gathering signatures for a simple repeal it may be better to file a separate initiative petition which would actually set forth the rules of practice the people want the council governed by.  If we’re already gathering 20,000 signatures for one initiative or referendum, perhaps there are two or three others we want signatures on at the same time?  These are options worth considering before formally launching a major petition drive.

Last Call!  Election observer training.  Tomorrow evening is an opportunity that comes only once per year.  The Clark County Elections Office will conduct Election Observer Training for those wanting to be official observers or just want to learn about the election process.  See the “Coming Events” section below for details.

COUNTY COUNCIL PUBLIC HEARING Tonight! June 7, 6:00pm
Public Service Center, sixth-floor hearing room, 1300 Franklin St., Vancouver
Note: This is the first Tuesday of the month so the meeting is at 6pm rather than the usual 10am.  What stunning action will the council take this week?  One of the most incredible was their recent ordinance that eliminated adherence to Robert’s Rules, the gold standard of meeting rules.  Robert’s Rules has a long tradition of protecting the voice of the minority while assuring that the majority prevails.  Robert’s Rules gives all parties a structure in which to operate.   Apparently we’ll now touch the tip of the scepter and wait for a ruling.  Seriously, we need to be involved in local politics where we have an actual chance to advance responsible government.  Please come to these county hearings, or at least watch them on www.CVTV.org (which will probably make you start attending anyway).

ELECTION OBSERVER TRAINING June 8, 6:00 – 8:00pm
Clark County Elections Office, 1408 Franklin Street, Vancouver
Take a look at the vote counting process.  Hear a description of the steps involved and see the equipment and the methods taken to verify a fair election.  This class certifies you to become one of the party's official observers if you desire, but the class is also for anyone with an interest or concern in the ballot counting process.  Register with Kenny Smith 360-521-8565 KennySmith@ClarkRepublicans.com
