Defeat the Freeholders' Charter

At the Thursday, August 22nd meeting of the Clark County Republican Central Committee, the Precinct Committee Officers passed a "Resolution to Defeat the Freeholders' Charter".  The resolution highlights four principles of good governance and then demonstrates how the proposed charter fails to serve on those points and therefore deserves to be defeated in November.  The four areas are:

The Republican Party believes that transparency is essential to good governance.

The Republican Party is deeply committed to the principle that government must be accountable and responsive to the citizens it serves.

The Republican Party believes in the importance of checks and balances on power.

The Republican Party is an advocate for limited and cost-effective government.

The resolution then closes with "Whereas, the Freeholders’ Charter unnecessarily changes this long established form of  County government.

Now therefore, be it resolved, we the Clark County Republican Party urge the defeat of the Freeholders’ Charter when it appears on the November 2014 ballot."

My personal perspective on the charter: There is a power-hungry elite group of people comprised of BOTH DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS who want to take nearly all the power away from the officials we can vote for and give it to an appointed County Manager and other appointed bureaucrats we don’t get to vote for. We can’t even vote to remove them if we don’t like what they are doing to us. I don’t want a “Downtown Dictator”, a “King of the County” a “Monarch of Clark” or any other powerful people who are not accountable to voters. The referendum/initiative process is a farce given the fact that the things that really do matter are illegal to do under the referendum. All this, and the fact that other counties who have done this have ended up with bigger government, more bloated government and higher taxes. This is a power grab by the people who are hacked off that we didn’t let them build their $2000/year per person toll bridge, and are trying to position themselves so they won’t be restrained by we the people ever again. This is a power grab of the elite from BOTH PARTIES against “We The People”! Democrat and Republican grassroots — VOTE NO ON THE CHARTER!!!!

Here is a good article, including a link to the “Minority Report” of the three freeholders who voted against the proposed charter:
