Columbian Gets Rep Paul Harris' Vote Wrong

From Representative Paul Harris:

I voted NO on the Transportation Budget ESSB 5024, but the Columbian printed that I voted yes.

The reason I voted NO was because I adamantly believe that the tolling taxing authority must remain with the elected Legislative Members and that we must reform the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) before funding it.  There are currently too many problems and mistakes being made by WSDOT.  Those points of contention include:

  • The 520 bridge was made with too many mistakes and structurally does not float. To fix this, WSDOT requires an additional $500 million to $1 billion in addition to the original project funding.
  • Brand new ferries purchased by the WSDOT do not float straight and tilt to one side when in the water. Int their current state they are unusable.
  • The WSDOT have spent over 10 years on a bridge project and overlook simple requirements such as bridge height.

For these reason I am not ready to fund the WSDOT and the Transportation budget and is why I voted against it.
